Fallacies as Broken Inference
A fallacy is a specific broken step in an inference: the exact point where the stated reasons stop carrying the weight of the conclusion, and naming that step matters more than naming the Latin label attached to it.
Essence
Fallacies are structural failures in reasoning, an inference that fails to give its conclusion the support it appears to give. Learning them is the practice of locating the precise step where a premise stops supporting a conclusion, so the break can be pointed at directly rather than only felt as unfairness.
Scenario
A city council debates a proposed rezoning. A consultant's report recommends it, citing traffic counts, projected tax revenue, and a displacement estimate. One council member responds: "Ignore the report. The consultant lives four blocks from the parcel and stands to gain from the resale value once it's rezoned." Heads nod. The report is never opened.
Something has gone wrong in that exchange, but calling it "unfair" leaves the objection floating free of the argument's actual joints. It helps to lay the exchange out as reasons offered and a conclusion drawn. Premise: the consultant has a financial stake in the rezoning going through. Conclusion: the report's recommendation should be disregarded. Between those two lines sits an inferential step, a claim that the premise, if true, licenses the conclusion. That step is what needs inspecting, and inspecting it, rather than reacting to the premise, is what this entry is about.
The consultant's financial stake might mean her judgment deserves extra scrutiny. It says nothing about whether the rezoning is good policy: the traffic counts, the tax projection, the displacement estimate stand exactly where they stood before her interest was mentioned. The premise can be true and the conclusion still fails to follow from it. That gap, not the fact of self-interest itself, is what the exchange broke on.
Definition
A fallacy, in the sense used here, is an inference whose premises do not give the conclusion the support the argument presents them as giving. It is a property of the move from premises to conclusion, not a property of the arguer's tone, motive, or of whether the conclusion happens to be true or false. That last point is worth holding onto through everything that follows: a fallacious argument can still have a true conclusion, and a valid, well-supported argument can have a false one if a premise is false. What a fallacy marks is a broken step, nothing about the conclusion directly.
Two families of broken step exist, and the difference matters for how each is found. A formal fallacy is a structure that is invalid: the premises could all be true and the conclusion still false, purely because of how the argument is arranged, regardless of what it is about. Spotting one is a matter of inspecting the pattern, independent of subject. An informal fallacy is a failure of relevance or evidential weight even where no formal pattern is broken; the premises are simply the wrong kind of reason for the conclusion drawn, and seeing that requires reading the content, not just the shape.
Three worked types make the informal case concrete. Ad hominem attacks the arguer rather than the argument: the premise concerns the arguer's character, motive, or circumstance, and the conclusion concerns the truth of a claim or the merit of a proposal, with nothing bridging the two. The rezoning exchange above is a case of it. Strawman refutes a claim weaker or different from the one actually advanced: it replaces an opponent's position with an easier target, defeats the substitute, and presents that defeat as if it touched the original. If the council member had instead said "the consultant wants us to rezone every residential block in the district," and the consultant had proposed nothing of the kind, the refutation of that invented claim would leave her actual recommendation untouched. False dilemma presents two options as exhaustive when a third exists: "either we rezone as recommended or the neighborhood stagnates forever" hides every option between those poles, including a modified rezoning or a different revenue source.
In each of the three, the premise offered is not false. The consultant's interest may be real; a broader rezoning may be undesirable if it were actually proposed; stagnation and full rezoning may both be live possibilities. The failure sits one step later, in the leap from a true or plausible premise to a conclusion the premise does not license. That leap, located and stated in one sentence, is the object this entry asks a reader to find before reaching for a label at all.
Common mistakes
Using "fallacy" as a synonym for a disliked argument, without locating any specific broken step, collapses the whole exercise into name-calling with a Latin veneer, exactly what fallacy-spotting exists to replace. If the only thing said is "that's a fallacy," no step has been pointed to, and the objection carries no more weight than "I disagree."
The fallacy fallacy is the mirror error: concluding that a claim itself is false because one argument offered for it was fallacious. Suppose someone argues "rezoning is good because the consultant says so, and she is an expert" and that appeal to authority is weak; the weakness of that argument does not make rezoning bad policy, since the conclusion might be well supported by other reasons the bad argument merely failed to capture. Rejecting a claim requires a reason to think the claim itself false, not merely the discrediting of one bad argument for it.
Naming the label before locating the step is the more subtle version of the same shortcut. Saying "that's an ad hominem" without stating which premise concerns the arguer and which claim it fails to reach sounds authoritative while skipping the diagnostic work the label is supposed to summarize. The label is a shorthand for a located break, not a substitute for locating one.
Build with it
Take a real argument encountered this week, ideally one that felt persuasive at the time. Write its premises and conclusion in plain language, your own words rather than the arguer's. Find the exact point where the premises stop carrying the conclusion, and state it as one sentence of the form "even if [premise] is true, it does not show [conclusion], because ..." Only after that sentence exists, attach a standard label if one fits. Then answer a further question directly: does locating the broken step tell you anything about whether the conclusion is actually true? Write the answer down.
Success on the page looks like three things: the premises and conclusion restated in your own words, one sentence naming the broken step that would survive someone asking "why doesn't that follow," and a separate, explicit verdict on the conclusion's truth that does not lean on the argument having failed. If a label arrives before the sentence, or the truth verdict quietly rests on "the argument was fallacious, so the claim is false," the exercise has not succeeded yet; rewrite the sentence, or rewrite the verdict, until the two stand apart.
